versity.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=160&proposalid=15445\nNOTE: This 2-day Se
minar continues from Thursday.\n\nOrganizations are increasingly empowering
a growing variety of data consumers to innovate their reporting, business
intelligence, and advanced analytics. Yet expanding access to data comes wi
th some risks, especially with increased concerns about ensuring compliance
with a variety of business policies, industry guidelines, and laws and reg
ulations.\n\nConventional approaches to data governance focusing on operati
ng models and org charts are necessary but insufficient. Practical deployme
nt of strategic data governance combines the definition of data policies an
d methods for operationalizing those data policies, along with descriptions
of the roles and responsibilities for ensuring how data policy compliance
aligns with business objectives.\n\nIn this seminar, we discuss aspects of
a framework for identifying business objectives that have implied data poli
cies, identifying and defining those policies, and how different types of d
ata policies are managed as part of a data governance program. We then disc
uss ways of distilling business policies from business objectives, identify
ing data dependencies, defining business-relevant data policies, methods of
data policy compliance, and ways that tools support data policy enforcemen
t. We will explore how taxonomies are used for data asset classification as
well as clarifying data consumer roles and data privileges.\n\nWe will hav
e some collaborative exercises to decompose a regulation and identify the r
elevant components and taxonomies inherent in the regulation.\n\nAttendees
will learn about:\n\n	Goals of data policy governance\n
Data policy basics: What is a data policy, and translating directives into
data policies\n
Developing taxonomies for data asset description, categorization, and class
ification\n	Assessing the enterprise data landscape\n
Capturing data asset metadata in a data catalog\n
Roles and privileges of the data consumers\n
Processes for bridging the gaps between the data owners, IT, and data consu
mers\n\n
